The Way of the Pilgrim

Pilgrimage has been growing in popularity in recent times, becoming something of a global industry. There is interest in the classic pilgrimage routes and destinations, such as Santiago de Compostela in Spain, or Lourdes in France; and in more local pilgrimages, with cathedrals, for example, aiming to ‘turn visitors into pilgrims’ and seeing increased visitor numbers. Books, films and blogs illustrate how people go on pilgrimage for a diversity of reasons. Pilgrimage is therefore a subject of interest to historians, theologians and anthropologists alike, as well as to a wide audience interested in spirituality.

This day will offer the chance to explore the history of pilgrimage and something of what it means to people today, focusing on Christian sites (while acknowledging parallels in other religious traditions). The course will draw on academic and more popular perspectives (such as the film, The Way, starring Martin Sheen); and consider a number of different pilgrimage sites and routes. It will include: lecture input, opportunities for reflection and discussion, and the chance to share a little of the experience of pilgrimage in relation to Salisbury Close and Cathedral (a site of historic and contemporary pilgrimage).

Pat Clegg will led the day, which will include lunch and 2 refreshment breaks.
