Mikey
Thanks, Mikey. Abuse of children is utterly sinful. Jesus said that for anyone causing the little ones to stumble, it would be better if a mill stone were tied around his neck and he was thrown into the sea. He reserved some of his strongest words for those who hurt children. Yes, I do have strong views. Protecting children is crucial in all denominations, not just in Roman Catholicism. It is also not good to cover up incidents to protect the Church. The Church is protected by protecting children in the first place and admitting sin in the second.

I am sure that there is a scripture in the new testament that says a day in heaven is a thousand years on earth. if that is the case, then the bible says the earth was created in six thousand years with a thousand years of rest. Does this mean that Christians believe that the earth was created in thousands rather than millions of years? lol
Thanks. We don't have to take literally what is not meant to be taken literally. If you look at the two creation stories of Genesis One and Genesis Two, they only contradict in the order of creation if taken literally. Gen One has human beings created last: Gen Two has man, plants, animals then woman. So I take these as key stories with deep meaning, rather than history. So, better to keep it as a story with six days rather than try to extend the period through that verse.

Our opening question relates to our topic of the day, what are your views on nuclear weapons?
Thanks. The just war theory in Christian ethics stresses the importance of protecting civilians - so pattern bombing of cities in the second world war was questionable. Similarly, nuclear weapons don't distinguish between soldiers and civilians. Ecologically, they are disastrous. They can't be uninvented, but can be negotiated down in number.
In relation to this do you believe killing is acceptable if in war or a way of surviving?
Thanks. I believe that a policeman needs to use force sometimes to protect weak people eg an older woman being attacked, or a woman being raped. On the international scale, we need armies to protect the weak from aggression. Sometimes, sadly, this means that killing soldiers from an aggressive army is necessary. In self defence, killing may be acceptable, but depends on the context.

Thanks, Mikey. All denominations - and indeed all religions - have to deal with the tragic and appalling sexual abuse of children. Jesus said some of his toughest sayings against those who cause little children to stumble. Hiding these cases is counterproductive. Strong measures are now in place and repentance by the Church and support for the victims is crucial.

What are your views on the current conflict in Egypt?
Thanks. I believe God's Holy Spirit is stirring up the people of Egypt to rebel against oppression. As I write this, some time later after your question, I believe the same is happening in Libya. The use by brave younger people of Facebook, Twitter and smartphones has meant an unleashing on YouTube etc of extraordinary live action and easier organising of demonstrations. Amazing. The first Gulf War made CNN as a news channel. These North African revolutions owe a lot to courage and the web.

it would seem you are against the gay and lesbian bishops in America who are now splitting the Chruch then?
Yes. I don't think a bishop should be in a sexual relationship outside of marriage.

In respect to your answer would it be fair to say that you see the Bible as a series of stories? If so I have many story books, some involving Green Eggs and Ham, it follows the same principle as most of Jesus' "miracles" as it is both very abstract and highly improbable, though if I was to worship the main character (Mr green eggs and ham) I would be locked up for being a lunatic.
Also, the Bible says that the Earth is only a certain amount of years old, whereas there is evidence that supports otherwise.
Thanks. Great question. Will have to answer later, as I have to dash to catch a train from Poole to London. Thanks for this session. keep an eye on the site for further answers later in the week. Bye for now.
